Empowering Women, Transforming Families, Strengthening Communities

At Gyan Vatika, we believe that when women and girls are empowered, entire communities thrive. Education, economic independence, and equal opportunities enable women to become leaders, decision-makers, and drivers of social progress.

Project Naari Shakti is dedicated to breaking barriers and uplifting women and girl children through education, skills, and opportunities. By supporting women’s empowerment, the initiative aims to strengthen families, expand economic participation, and promote a more inclusive society.

The Challenge

While progress has been made in improving opportunities for women and girls in rural India, many challenges continue to limit their full participation in education and economic life.

  • Barriers to Girls’ Education
Although enrolment of girls in schools has improved over time, many still lack access to quality education and learning resources. Socio-cultural norms in some communities continue to prioritise boys’ education, while early marriage often forces girls to leave school prematurely.
  • Economic Constraints
In low-income households, families often face difficult choices regarding education expenses. As a result, investment in girls’ education may be seen as less important than that of boys.
  • Infrastructure and Safety Concerns
Lack of safe transportation, inadequate school infrastructure, and absence of separate sanitation facilities for girls can contribute to higher dropout rates, particularly during adolescence.
  • Household Responsibilities
Many rural girls are expected to support household chores, care for younger siblings, or assist in agricultural work, leaving limited time for education.
  • Invisible Role of Women Farmers
Women constitute a significant share of the rural agricultural workforce, yet their contributions often go unrecognized. Because land ownership is largely concentrated in the hands of men, many women who work in farming are not officially recognised as farmers and therefore have limited access to credit, government support, and agricultural resources.
  • Economic and Financial Exclusion
Limited access to education, skill training, and financial services restricts women’s opportunities to pursue stable and well-paying livelihoods. Social norms, safety concerns, and the burden of unpaid domestic work further limit their economic participation.

What We Do

Project Naari Shakti works to expand opportunities for women and girls through education, awareness, and economic empowerment.

Our key initiatives include:

  • Supporting Girls’ Education
Providing free access to community libraries and encouraging increased enrolment of girls in rural schools supported by our initiatives.
  • Promoting Women’s Entrepreneurship
Encouraging women to develop small businesses and social enterprises that promote financial independence and economic inclusion.
  • Awareness and Community Engagement
Organising awareness campaigns that highlight the importance of girls’ education, gender equality, and women’s rights.
  • Encouraging Leadership and Participation
Supporting women and girls to become active participants in community development and decision-making processes.

Our Approach

Project Naari Shakti focuses on creating pathways for long-term empowerment through education, economic opportunities, and community support.

Education as a Gateway to Opportunity

By providing girls with access to learning resources through our libraries and schools, we aim to strengthen their educational foundations and encourage continued learning.

Entrepreneurship and Economic Independence

The project seeks to support women in developing small enterprises through training, mentorship, and incubation support, enabling them to generate income and gain financial independence.

Community Awareness

Through dialogue and awareness initiatives, we aim to challenge social norms that limit opportunities for women and girls and encourage communities to support gender equality.

Shakti Sena

To strengthen community leadership, Project Naari Shakti encourages the formation of “Shakti Sena.”

Shakti Sena is a network of women volunteers and community members whose lives have been positively influenced by empowerment initiatives. These women become advocates for change within their communities, helping support and guide others.

Members of Shakti Sena can contribute by:

  • Encouraging girls to continue their education.
  • Supporting women who wish to start small businesses or livelihoods.
  • Promoting awareness about women’s rights, health, and financial inclusion.
  • Acting as mentors and role models for other women and girls in their communities.

Through Shakti Sena, empowerment becomes a community-led movement, where women support and uplift one another.

A Vision for Gender Equality

Project Naari Shakti envisions communities where women and girls are able to learn, work, and lead without barriers.

When women gain access to education, financial resources, and opportunities, they not only transform their own lives but also strengthen their families and communities.

By investing in women and girls today, we help build a future that is more equitable, prosperous, and inclusive for everyone.
