Planting Trees, Nurturing Responsibility, Growing a Greener Future
At Gyan Vatika, we believe that caring for the planet begins with small actions rooted in responsibility and awareness. Trees are not only essential for ecological balance but also for sustaining life, protecting biodiversity, and creating healthier communities.
Project Prithvi is dedicated to creating sustainable green spaces by planting indigenous plants and fruit-bearing trees in rural communities. By prioritising native species, the project supports local ecosystems, improves soil health, and contributes to long-term environmental sustainability.
Our approach goes beyond simply planting saplings. We believe that for meaningful environmental impact, trees must be nurtured and protected until they grow and thrive.
What We Do
Project Prithvi focuses on building a culture of environmental stewardship within communities, especially among young people.
Our key initiatives include:
- Planting Indigenous Trees
We plant native and fruit-bearing trees that are well suited to the local climate and ecosystem.
- Creating Community Green Spaces
Schools, community areas, and open spaces are transformed into living green environments that benefit both people and nature.
- Student Participation – One Child, One Tree
In collaboration with schools, each participating child plants their own tree and gives it a name. This creates a personal connection between the child and the tree, encouraging responsibility and long-term care. - Long-Term Tree Care
Students and local communities are encouraged to nurture and protect the trees as they grow, ensuring that saplings survive and flourish into mature trees.
Why This Matters
Across many regions, large numbers of saplings are planted every year as part of environmental initiatives. However, many of these plants do not survive due to lack of maintenance and long-term care.
Planting trees is only the first step. Without nurturing and monitoring, many saplings fail to grow into healthy trees.
Project Prithvi addresses this challenge by creating a sense of ownership and responsibility. When children plant and name their own trees, they naturally develop a connection with them and take pride in watching them grow.
This simple idea—one child, one tree—helps ensure that saplings are cared for, protected, and sustained over time.
Beyond environmental benefits, the project also instils environmental awareness in young minds, helping cultivate a generation that values nature and understands the importance of protecting the planet.
Our Approach – The Tree With a Name
One of the most meaningful aspects of Project Prithvi is the idea that every tree planted has a story and a guardian. Through our “One Child, One Tree” initiative, each participating student plants a tree and gives it a name. This simple act creates a powerful emotional connection between the child and the tree.
When a child names a tree, it is no longer just a sapling in the ground—it becomes their tree. Students take pride in watering it, protecting it, and watching it grow over the years. As the child grows, so does the tree—symbolising responsibility, care, and the shared future between people and nature.
This approach helps address one of the biggest challenges in environmental initiatives: the survival of planted saplings. By giving children a sense of ownership, trees are far more likely to be nurtured and maintained until they grow into strong, mature trees.
Beyond environmental impact, the initiative also cultivates a lifelong relationship between young people and the natural world. Because when a child grows up caring for a tree, they also grow up caring for the planet.
By involving school children, teachers, and local communities, the project creates a shared responsibility for protecting green spaces. Over time, these small efforts can transform landscapes while nurturing environmental consciousness among the next generation. Thus combining environmental sustainability with community participation
Each tree planted becomes more than a plant—it becomes a symbol of hope, responsibility, and the promise of a greener future.
Sustainable Development Goals targeted
Project Prithvi aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
Planting and nurturing trees helps absorb carbon dioxide and contributes to climate resilience.
Promotes biodiversity, restores ecosystems, and supports sustainable use of terrestrial environments.
By involving students directly in environmental activities, the project promotes environmental education and awareness.
Creating green spaces improves environmental quality and community wellbeing.
