Caring for Animals, Restoring Balance, Cultivating Compassion

At Gyan Vatika, we believe that a compassionate society extends its care beyond humanity to all living beings. Animals have long been an integral part of rural life—supporting agriculture, livelihoods, and ecological balance.

Yet in many communities today, this relationship between humans and animals is becoming increasingly strained.

Project Pashu is dedicated to fostering harmony between humans and animals by promoting compassion, responsible care, and sustainable coexistence.

The Challenge

Across many rural regions, changing economic realities and environmental pressures have disrupted the traditional relationship between humans and animals.

  • Abandoned Cattle
When cattle stop producing milk or become too old to work, many small farmers—already struggling with limited income—are unable to maintain them. As a result, these animals are often left to roam freely.
  • Crop Loss and Farmer Distress
Stray cattle and wild animals such as nilgai (blue bulls) frequently enter farmlands and feed on standing crops. This leads to significant economic losses for farmers and sometimes creates resentment toward animals.
  • Shrinking Forests and Habitat Loss
Localized deforestation, agricultural expansion, and heavy dependence on forests for fuelwood have reduced natural habitats. As forests shrink, wildlife is increasingly pushed into human settlements and agricultural areas, leading to human–animal conflicts.
  • Stray Animals in Villages and Towns
Dogs, cats, and other animals often live without proper care or protection. Many face neglect, abuse, or lack of access to food and shelter.

These challenges reveal a growing disconnect between humans and animals, even though we share the same environment and depend on the same natural resources.

What We Do

Project Pashu works to promote a culture of compassion and responsible care for animals while supporting solutions that reduce conflict between humans and wildlife.

Our work focuses on:

  • Awareness and Community Engagement
Encouraging communities to understand the importance of treating animals with compassion and recognising their role in maintaining ecological balance.
  • Promoting Responsible Animal Care
Encouraging humane treatment and community responsibility toward local animals such as dogs, cats, and cattle.
  • Supporting Sustainable Solutions
Collaborating with local communities, youth groups, and institutions to develop practical approaches that protect both livelihoods and animals.

Our Approach

Project Pashu promotes practical, community-driven solutions that support peaceful coexistence between humans and animals.

  • Supporting Abandoned Cattle
We aim to raise awareness and mobilise community support for caring for abandoned cattle by pooling resources such as cattle feed and working with local authorities to strengthen or establish gaushalas (cow shelters) where animals can be cared for responsibly.
  • Reducing Human–Wildlife Conflict
To address crop damage and wildlife intrusion into farmlands, we advocate for afforestation and restoration of natural habitats. Increasing forest cover helps restore ecological balance and reduces the pressure on animals to move into agricultural lands.
  • Caring for Stray Animals
We work with local youth and communities to organise sensitisation workshops that encourage humane treatment of animals. The project also aims to collaborate with local authorities and organisations to support animal shelters and care initiatives.

Compassion Circles

To strengthen community participation, Project Pashu encourages the formation of “Compassion Circles.”
Compassion Circles are small community groups consisting of local youth, farmers, teachers, and volunteers who come together to promote responsible and compassionate care for animals in their villages.
These circles can play an important role in:

  • Monitoring and supporting the care of abandoned cattle through community coordination and collaboration with local gaushalas.
  • Promoting humane treatment of stray animals by spreading awareness and supporting feeding, vaccination, and shelter initiatives.
  • Encouraging community dialogue on human–wildlife coexistence, especially in areas where animals such as nilgai frequently enter agricultural fields.
  • Supporting tree planting and habitat restoration efforts that help reduce pressure on wildlife habitats.

By creating local networks of people who care for animals and their ecosystems, Compassion Circles help build a culture of shared responsibility, empathy, and peaceful coexistence between humans and all living beings.

A Vision of Coexistence

Project Pashu is built on a simple yet powerful idea: humans and animals must learn to coexist with mutual respect.

When communities cultivate compassion toward animals, they also strengthen ecological balance, reduce conflict, and nurture a more humane society.

Through awareness, community participation, and sustainable practices, Project Pashu seeks to bridge the growing divide between humans and animals.

Because ultimately, we all share the same planet, the same ecosystems, and the responsibility to care for them.
